Take Care of Your Smile This Holiday Season

Posted on October 21, 2017 by wlda

The holidays are busy, and it’s even during prep, it’s easy to let the little things slide. Don’t let your dental hygiene routine be one of them! With all the treats, family, and photos of the holiday season, it is a very good idea to keep your smile bright.

Remember that, though there is definitely room in your holiday diet for treats, all sticky, sugary, or acidic foods should be eaten only in moderation. When you choose to eat these foods, be sure to rinse your mouth out with water after eating them. Chew a piece of sugarless gum for 20 minutes after eating, to stimulate saliva flow to clean your teeth.

Don’t forget to brush and floss your teeth! This takes a total of only 6-7 minutes a day, and in the long run can save a lot of money, and even potentially pain or infection. In the short term, it keeps your teeth looking clean and white. Remember: brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each session, and floss your teeth once a day, for 2-3 minutes each time. Â

Use the proper tools to keep your hygiene habits effective. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle pressure, as hard bristles and scrubbing can damage your tooth enamel and gums. Try single-filament floss to reduce the risk of fraying or breaking, and to ensure proper strength to clean between your teeth. If you choose to add mouthwash to your routine, make sure it is a therapeutic mouthwash, rather than merely a cosmetic one. Don’t give mouthwash to children under 6.
